Nest building and pond dipping!

We spent this afternoon building nests in our quiet area and pond dipping in our school pond.

We used materials from the floor to build our nests. These included twigs, branches, leaves and sticky weed to make our nest, we tested them using pebbles, and finally put them in a tree for a bird to use!

We are very lucky to have a pond at Roydon School and we have been busy observing pond life. We found water boatmen, newts, tadpoles, woodlice, centipedes and worms. We used nets, view finders, magnifying glasses, trays and spoons to study the creatures we found. Each creature was looked at very carefully and we made sure we returned them all to their habitat. Take a look at our photos!

Dens at Roydon Fen!

We spent the morning at Roydon Fen. We sketched the landscape, studied the wildlife and listened to the sounds of the countryside. We saw slugs, ladybirds, woodlice and even a deer!

Before we left the fen we were asked by Mr Santy and Mrs Ketley to do some den building. We talked about how we could make a solid base, how we could make sure it was sturdy and how we might keep the wind and rain out (even though we had glorious sunshine!). We set off in groups picking up branches from the woodland floor, working together, to create our fantastic dens!

Our winning den was this one! Congratulations!

Quadblogging!

We are lucky to have been set up with some Quadblogging partners!

Quadblogging involves four blogs from four different schools being partnered together. Each week one blog is the focus blog with the other three blogs visiting and commenting during that week. The following week the focus blog changes and the remaining 3 classes visit and comment, etc.

Our quad blog is with these 3 schools:

9 and 10 year olds from Nount Scopus Memorial College in Victoria, Australia
http://blogs.scopus.vic.edu.au/4b12/

Pupils from Norbridge Academy in Nottinghamshire, UK
http://www.head.norbridgeblogs.net/

Year 5's from Fieldhead Carr Primary School in Leeds, UK
http://www.year5blogspot.blogspot.co.uk/

This week our focus is our bloggers from Australia!

Happy blogging!

Roydon Primary School adverts!

We were asked by Mr Santy to make a 60 second advert to promote the school and make people want to come and visit.
Our adverts had to include:
v a rhetorical question
v some wow words and powerful adjectives
v a pupil’s comment
v a slogan
v repetition
v alliteration

We used iMovie to create our adverts.

Have a watch and tell us what you think!

Inspired by WEEE man

After listening to Lord Sugar and studying the WEEE Man, we have been asked to create a model for Eco Warriors.

The WEEE Man sculpture which can be found at the Eden Porject, in Cornwall, has been constructed to show the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) the average British household throws away in a lifetime.

At seven metres high, his grimacing head towers over the Eden Project outdoor gardens. Mobile phones, mp3 players, lawn mowers and the like make up his bones and sinews; his teeth are computer mice; his ears are satellite dishes; and his brain is built from computer parts.

Therefore, we collected items that we throw away, or recycle at home.

We used them to build our own sculpture to represent the company Eco Warriors!

Check out some of our class explaining their designs below:

Book or film characters - can you guess who we are?

The whole of Roydon Primary School dressed up as book or film characters today to raise money for charity. We had Tracy Beaker, Horrid Henry, Dr Who, High School Musical Cheerleaders, Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, Captain Jack Sparrow, James Bond and many more! Can you guess which book or film character we all are?
